The Topography of Athens with some Remarks on its Antiquities

Item #M7294

Rare first edition. John Murray, London, 1821. In-8, [vi] & cxiv & 429 & [7] pages, frontispiece, 8 folding plates (most of them maps), three additional single-page plates from another work bound in, half-title discarded, frontispiece bound with other plates instead of facing title-page. Slightly later half russia, marbled boards, spine divided by raised bands between gilt rules, second compartment gilt-lettered direct. A little light spotting. Extremities a little rubbed, front joint cracked but strong. Library stamp to verso of title-page (overstamped "Canceled"). The first edition of this important and pioneering account of the antique topography of Athens, scarce in commerce. Leake travelled extensively in Greece in the early 1800s and spent some time negotiating with Ali Pasha before returning to England where he began writing. Most of his publications were concerned with the topography of ancient Greece and they are still of considerable importance in that field. Leake's work on Athens is the basis for modern topographical and archaeological studies of the city. A very important work. The three extra single-page plates in this copy (two maps engraved by J. Walker, bound before the folding plates, and one plate printed by C. Hullmandel, bound facing p.21) are from Leake's Journal of a Tour in Asia Minor, 1824. Language: English. Relevant subjects: Greece & Aegean.

Language: English.
