Item #M1141d

Unique: George Goyon's copy with his handwritten marginalia and a few plates coloured from his hand. Only 500 copies of this book were printed, this copy is nr XVIII. CNRS, Paris, 1951. First edition. Folio, 197 pages, 139 plates. Original grey cloth, slightly rubbed and stained, binding is shaken, but holding well, small split along the spine, a good copy. Includes the additional loose aquarella by Lucienne Epron (but not the one by George Goyon himself). The marginalia are of historical interest. In his 1987 publication "La découverte des trésors de Tanis", George Goyon gives a somewhat different account of the chronology of the discoveries and of his own role in them. This account was discredited by Montet's daughter and by Jean Yoyotte in the 1998 edition of the Lettres de Tanis. Nevertheless, the interest of this copy of the Psousennes volume is to follow George Goyon's thoughts as he annotated his copy. For example on page 19 Pierre Montet writes (in French): "Helped by my two companions Mr Fougerousse and Mr Goyon, I removed a stone from the wall and entered an empty corridor": this was underlined by George Goyon who wrote "no, it was me".
