Rare complete set of 2 volumes bound in one. George P. Putnam, New York, 1849. Second edition. In-8, viii & 326 & 323 pages. Half-leather with cloth covers. Stamped gilt ornamentation on the front cover, as well as raised bands and stamped gilt lettering/ornamentation on the spine. Moderate shelf wear, including bumped corners and light rubbing to the covers, with heavier rubbing at the edges, corners, and bands. There is chipping to the top/bottom of the spine. The binding is solid. The text block has gilt edges. A former owner's notations in ink appear on the front flyleaf. The sepia frontispieces depict "the great winged bull." The pages show mild to moderate age toning and scattered foxing/spotting. This work is profusely illustrated with fold-out maps, diagrams, figures, and plates (including some in color). A nice copy.
