Extremely rare. John Murray, London, 1824-1827. First edition. In-4. Original front wrappers of the parts preserved with signed presentation inscriptions by the author, large folding map, 42 plates with original tissue guards, 8 of which folding, 22 in-text vignettes and illustrations, each part with in-8 advert pamphlet bound at front, each plate with descriptive text leaves; original parts bound in modern half red calf, marbled boards, gilt lettering to spine, all edges uncut, some very light occasional spotting with slightly more to margins of final part, a very good set. Blackmer 401. From the library of Charles O’Hara, presumably son of the Sligo politician Charles O'Hara (1746–1822) (author’s presentation inscriptions). Scarce work of lithographs depicting the ruins and hieroglyphics of Egypt as visited by the author and artist in 1821-1822. Edward Joshua Cooper (1798-1863) was an Irish politician and well-known astronomer who founded the Markree Observatory in 1830. His journey took him from Cairo down the Nile to the North Nubian region around Aswan, accompanied with the artist Bossi who drafted many of the illustrations in the work. Many of the temples he saw and depicted in situ, such as the Temple of Taffeh, Temple of Gerf Hussein, and Temple of Dendur, have since been removed to institutions for preservation purposes. He was particularly interested in the ceiling hieroglyphics of the temple at Dendera and Esna which depicted the zodiacs, and seven of the folding plates show the reliefs in full. The plates also show costumes of various peoples Cooper encountered along the Nile. Language: English. Relevant subjects: Egypt: Travelers & Egyptologists.
