The University of Chicago Oriental Institute Publications, Volume LII. The University of Chicago, Chicago, 1939. First edition. Elephant folio, xi & 25 pages, 63 plates. Boards, 1/4 cloth. Original brown and brick cloth, with gold lettering to spine. Color frontispiece counted as a plate. Ex-library copy with bookplate on inside of front cover, and pocket on inside of back board. Minor shelf wear. Binding and interior in very good condition. This volume is a detailed catalog of ivories recovered from the treasury of the early 12th-century palace at Megiddo (modern Tell el-Mutesellim). The 382 ivory pieces are described briefly and illustrated at actual scale with photographs and line drawings. The ivories are on display at the Oriental Institute of Chicago and the Rockefeller Museum in Jerusalem. They were found in the stratum VIIA, or Late Bronze Age layer of the site. Carved from hippopotamus incisors from the Nile, they show Egyptian stylistic influence. An ivory pen case was found inscribed with the cartouche of Ramses III. Language: English.
