Extremely rare work, complete. J.G. Cotta, Stuttgart, 1822-1827. First edition. Folio, text & 78 plates. Original fascicles, loose as issued, laid in a strong, modern, decorative case. Some foxing, stronger on text leaves, rarer and marginal on a few plates, small humidity stain of corner of plates 49 to 59, not reaching the images/drawings. Otherwise a clean and unmarked copy, in very good condition. The work has been collated and is complete: 1st part (Monuments): viii pages, 20 pages, 13 leaves of explanation of the plates, 64 plates of which 4 in colour. 2nd part (Greek Inscriptions): 29 pages of text by G. Niebuhr and A.J. Letronne, followed by 14 plates. The original wrappers of livraisons 1, 2, 3 and 11 are also preserved. Born in Köln in 1790, Gau went on to study architecture in Paris and in 1819, was able to travel between the 1st and 2nd cataract of the Nile. His drawings and plans are of great accuracy for the time, as acknowledged a century later by Gaston Maspero in his "Rapports relatifs à la consolidation des temples" in 1909-1911. Language: French.
